Spring Practicum in Lithography 2026 University of Alberta Department of Art and Design
Lithographic stone & plate prints & Mixed Media
Celebrating Jazz music as a source of inspiration, this show features stone lithography prints. Stone lithography images are reproduced from limestones by alternate applications of grease, gum arabic & acid to allow some parts grease loving and in some parts water loving. This way, oil based ink can be applied to a damp stone and transferred to paper, creating an edition of prints.The skill & technical knowledge is complex and precise.
Jazz artists that inspired these prints: Esperanza Spalding, Mati Klarwein, Tu.ukz and Satoshi Mastuzawa, Saint Idiot, Miles Davis, and the venue: Yardbird Suite.
Light Vibrations by Leah Wilson

Leah’s acrylic painting is described as a color field, abstract, cubisitic at times with a pinch of symbolism. Using vibrant & bright contrasting colors, cool & hot side by side, bending space with drips, seeking that smashed stained glass effect. Her purpose when painting is to achieve a visual journey that challenges our belief in the solid – and how in fact – everything is a vast space full of moving bits if you look close enough.
Recent works exhibit metallic elements, inspired by reflections, light on water, & color vibrations.
Somewhere in Algonquin by Shelley Blandford

Shelley Blandford is an abstract artist who paints with acrylic, ink, & oil, in Edmonton. Her work focuses on the process of exploration and experimentation with acrylic pouring and alcohol inks. In her work, she accesses the tranquility of nature through expressive movement, where she aims to transcend the painting’s material constraints and transport the viewer to a moment of stillness and peace.

RETROСПЕКTIVE celebrates 10 Years of Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts (ACUA) Gallery and Boutique with a sampling of the 64 visual artists on display in ACUA’s Gallery from December 6 to Christmas Eve. In 2015 ACUA acquired their own space to share art: displaying the legacy and creativity of Ukrainian artists and their stories about our culture, heritage, and identity.
Irrational Space by Dallas Bartel

Dallas Bartel grew up in the Edmonton area and spent his high school years in Leduc. Art has always been a personal pursuit, something he has enjoyed privately throughout his life. Since 2021, however, he has focused on creating work to share throughout the city. Motivated by family, friends and the clever artistic teachings of Janet Mason, Dallas is currently exploring work with abstract expressionism using acrylic, graphite and ink. Influences of 1950’s to 1970’s design, he is using repressed, saturated colours against primary hues, shapes, and lines over irrational space.

Michelle Lori Ewoniak, photographer, and dedicated volunteer as a Director on the EJS Board, is wrapping up our season of art in Yardbird Community Art Gallery with a stunning exhibit for May & June 2025. Michelle shares with us her fabulous photography of live music featured at Yardbird Suite & other venues in Edmonton. Beautifully printed by her sponsor Precision Imaging.
Michelle will be donating some of the proceeds to the Edmonton Jazz Society (1973) Yardbird Suite. Always keen to promote live music & culture in Edmonton, Michelle invites you all to attend her Artist Reception on May 6th from 6-8pm to share memories & to celebrate “Moments” of some of the finest music memories captured by her camera.
The Fragrance of Spring by Painter Rebecca Fersovitch

Rebecca Fersovitch is a self-taught artist and breast cancer survivor based in Beaumont, Alberta. By day, she works as a bookkeeper, but her evenings are devoted to painting and sketching, where her creativity flourishes.
Rebecca’s artistic journey began in 2021 when she joined a paint night with her friend Leesila. At the time, she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer, and painting became a welcome escape and a source of joy. That night, she picked up her first brush, and she hasn’t put it down since.
Specializing in acrylic butterflies and floral motifs, Rebecca’s realistic style captures the intricate beauty of nature. She also works in graphite and has recently begun experimenting with gouache, adding depth and versatility to her art. This year, she plans to take formal art classes to expand her skills and explore new techniques.
Rebecca’s work reflects her profound gratitude for the beauty in the world around her and her unwavering faith in the love of Jesus Christ. She often describes her cancer diagnosis as an unexpected gift that opened the door to a new passion. Her pieces are a testament to resilience, faith, and the power of finding joy in unexpected places.

Phil Alain is a Canadian artist, producer, and arts advocate known for his vibrant, community-driven projects. As the founder of Night of Artists, he has spent decades uniting creatives through exhibitions, live painting, and large-scale collaborative art events. Phil is also the producer of ARTwalk and the Gala for Amy’s House, honoring his late wife, Amy Alain, and supporting cancer patients and families.
Igor Postash‘s art offers a slice of life that often prompts laughter, even in the quiet confines of an art gallery. His work is reminiscent of iconic or religious painters from centuries past, but his scenes are taken from everyday life, spiced up with an oddball cast of characters and settings.

Mental chatter is that constant stream of thought that passes through your mind. These thoughts can be positive, negative, or neutral. And no matter the form, this self-talk will impact your ability to pursue your career purpose and affect your overall welfare. It is virtually impossible to eliminate self-talk.
Spyder Yardley-Jones is an internationally recognized cartoonist, painter, illustrator, and sculptor. He has been teaching at YOUTHWRITE since its inception 28 years ago. Spyder has also taught workshops and artist in residency in both the Edmonton school system and the catholic schools and the Art Gallery of Alberta.
