Thom Golub’s Improvising Network

Freely improvised music is all about connections. No score, no predetermined idea of what will be played, it only relies on the connection between musicians in order to communicate ideas with each other and with the audience, who are so often an integral part of the spirit of this music.

Cofounding The Improvised Network (TIN) with Saxophonist David Hoyle, guitarist Lane Arndt and trumpeter Eric Weiden in the early 2000s, bassist Thom Golub had already been involved in improvising various sorts of music with drummer Ron de Jong, multi instrumentalist Ryan Francis, David Hoyle, and Lane Arndt for five years or so.

Visiting Calgary based musicians Darren Williams, the legendary Dan Michel and Chris Dadge and bent spoon trio (at the Yardbird’s Momentum series) made a huge impression on him as a fledgling improviser around this time as well.

Many of these folks ended up on a sojourn to Vancouver to study with Marilyn Crispell, Nels Cline, Mark Helias, Mats Gustafson and Dylan van der Schafe, where Thom met a few new musical collaborators. Among them was multi reed player and composer Shane Krause.

Thom reunites some friends from these past collaborations, projects and life experiences and he has added some new ones as well. The spirit of free improvisation is alive and well with this evening’s line up.
