A Yardbird Suite Special Rental
Owing to influences from art rock to electronic music to free jazz, Saint Idiot records are sound palette rich and endlessly layered, and as such, staging them with a quartet results in a captivating tension between what is ultimately the simple soul of the pop song, and the unashamedly maximalist excess of studio recording. What you get is a “pop concert” that is at all times succumbing to the maelstrom of free improvisation. Saint Idiot will be performing songs from Thin Places (2024), Alternate Utopias from a Nostalgic Future (2021), and Goodnight, St. Idiot (2018). An amuse-bouche opener from the Tony Flanagan Trio will precede the St. Idiot onslaught.
Tomáš (Tom) Andel, or Saint Idiot, is a Slovak-Canadian avant-pop musician, multi-instrumentalist, and mix engineer in Edmonton. His music grapples with that sense of loneliness so many of us struggle to reckon with in the alleged age of hyperconnection, and the particular anxiety of being alive, of all times, now. Even so, the music of Saint Idiot is reverent and downright ecstatic—“a music of surprises,” often compared to acts like Dan Deacon, Sufjan Stevens and Björk.
