By fusing Latin rhythms and song styles with jazz improvisation, Montuno West creates a sound that is electrifying and engaging to jazz, World, and Latin audiences alike.
The group is comprised of former members of Albertan Latin stalwarts, Bomba and Cumako. Between these two groups, a strong tradition of jazz-inspired Latin music has been common in Alberta over the last twenty years.
Edmonton jazz musicians Chris Andrew and Rubim de Toledo join forces with Calgary-based Latin percussionists Raul Tabera and Luis Tovar to create a sound rooted in Cuban, Venezuelan, and Brazilian rhythm, mixed with lush musical arrangements, and compelling jazz-inspired improvisation.
In September of 2018, the group released their debut CD entitled, Tocar Tambor. The recording features NYC maintain trombonist Luis Bonilla (Village Vanguard Orchestra, Phil Collins, Mingus Dynasty Orchestra).
