Mboya Nicholson & the Shortkestra

For this performance, honouring Black History Month, Mboya Nicholson and the Shortkestra (only 9 musicians, so its a short orchestra!), delves into the repertoire of several great pioneers.

  • February 24, 2024
    8:00 pm - 10:30 pm

Part of this concert will be a kind of tip of the hat to African American settlers who moved up to Alberta from Oklahoma and various places in the midwestern and southern United States, as the Shortkestra will play few pieces from Count Basie’s and Bennie Moten’s orchestras, which came to prominence in some of the same regions of the U.S. Those settlers to Alberta came from years earlier.

In addition, there will be music by Turner Layton, and various timeless standards.
