Don Berner Sextet Revisited

In 2001, Edmonton jazz musician Don Berner launched his debut album Sextet, a straight ahead album of original compositions in the spirit of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers or Bobby Watson’s Horizon, leading to international airplay and touring.

He revisited this concept again with sextet albums coming out in 2009 and 2014 that led to a national CBC live broadcast, a Western Canadian tour, and a WCMA nomination in 2014. Seeking new sources of inspiration, Berner put that particular ensemble on the shelf to explore other milieus in the jazz idiom. His love for this avenue of expression rekindled, more than 10 years after his last sextet excursion Berner is happy to have the opportunity to revisit some of his older sextet material and new compositions for one night at the Yardbird Suite.

Don Berner has acted as a host of CKUA’s A Time For Jazz, wrote the Jazz Standards column for SEE Magazine, was name one of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2013, was a producer for the Yardbird Jazz Festival in Edmonton for several years, has recorded on dozens of albums and toured nationally and internationally, has appeared alongside Slide Hampton, Tommy Banks, Hugh Fraser, Chucho Valdez, and directs the Don Berner Big Band, Edmonton’s first and only professional big band with a fully programmed concert season.
