Steeped in the arts scene since high-school, Biboye quickly became a sought-after player — recently completing his music degree at MacEwan University. Inspired by innovative artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Jamire Williams, and Mikel Patrick Avery, Biboye’s artistic vision embraces the abstract essence of instrumental music to create ephemeral expressions of the experience of moving through the modern world. A world built for speed, but rarely in service of the pace at which we can best love and be loved.
This evening, Biboye invites you to bathe in the sea of modern Black American Music (BAM!) with his Blacktet. Alongside an all-black band of frequent collaborators who continue to leave an indelible mark on Edmonton’s music scene, this concert is a soulful exploration of ‘today’s jazz’. It stands as a testament to the diversity, innovation, and unyielding spirit of Black artists in the 21st century. This dynamic ensemble, born from a shared musical history and each bringing a unique voice and perspective to the stage, will take you on a remarkable ride through original compositions and jazz/jazz-adjacent works by contemporary Black maestros; From Gerald Clayton & D’angelo, to local legend Mboya Nicholson. Be ready for an eclectic setlist that pays homage to the trailblazers while pushing the boundaries of contemporary expression.
More than simply a concert – it’s a celebration of the ongoing legacy of Black artists shaping the future of music. Join us as we honor the heritage, embrace the present, and ignite the future with the captivating sounds of modern Black American Music.
