Based in New York City, 2013 Grammy nominated artist, pianist and composer Manuel Valera was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Since arriving in New York, he has become well known in the modern jazz scene, garnering national reviews and lending his talents as a pianist and composer to such notable artists as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera, Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, Jeff "Tain" Watts, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Joel Frahm, and Yosvany Terry, among many others.

One of his other groups, the New Cuban Express received a 2013 Grammy nomination in the Best Latin Jazz Album category for his 2012 recording "New Cuban Express". This group explores and fuses the music of Cuba with jazz.

The music of the Manuel Valera Trio is a refreshing take on Cuban music as well as interpretations of jazz standards and previously-recorded original compositions by Valera. It fuses elements of straight-ahead, Latin jazz and R&B to create a very personal sound with a broad appeal. Manuel's new CD "The Seasons" should be released in time for his Yardbird Suite gig.

"Here’s a Cuban pianist who lives up to all the buzz about the rad chops flaunted by many of New York’s young Caribbean jazzers."
Jim Macnie, Village Voice

“He leaves no doubt that he is destined to play a role in the future of jazz.”

Billboard

"The sound is both old and spectacularly new in terms of his re-invention of the music of a tradition to which he is inextricably linked. And this increases Valera’s importance as a musician in the arena of Afro-Cuban music."
